Q. Why doesn't my needlepoint thread always match the colors on the canvas?
A. When an artist hand paints a canvas (most are done one at a time), they may use a color that isn't quite the same as DMC perle cotton. Therefore, we use a color that is as close to the canvas color as possible.

Q. What is the gray line border around the needlepoint canvas?
A.The gray line is where the artist wants you to stop needlepointing. This also give the artist the size she wants the design to be. It is not necessary to stitch beyond this line.

Q. What is included in a counted cross stitch kit?

Q. How do I decide which needle to use for cross-stitch?
The job of the needle is to carry your thread through the fabric do that no damage is done to either the thread or the fabric. The eye of the needle should be large enough the hold all the thread being used without its being pinched. The needle should be large enough that the fabric is gradually parted by the needle so that the thread does not drag or catch on the fabric as is passes through. But since we use different threads or different numbers of threads on different fabrics, the fabric size is often used as the criterion. If you must have a guide…use a #26 tapestry needle on 18- or 16-count aida, use a #24 tapestry needle on 16-, 14-, 11-count fabric, use a #22 tapestry needle on 10-count and heavier fabrics. Use a #24 needle on 32- to 25-count fabrics, and a larger needle on a coarser fabric counts. Always use a chenille (sharp) needle of the corresponding size when working with waste canvas.

Q. Can I change the colors in a design and how would I do that?
Of course! Begin by laying out all the colors suggested by the designer – lay them out in front of you from light to dark with each color family. See how they relate to each other and make your changes so that the new colors relate in the same way and match the tonal values of the original threads. If a pattern call for four shades of light pink, three shades of light green, and five shades of light blue and you change the light pinks to dark rose/pinks, you will also need to darken the green and the blues, or the rose/pinks will “scream” at you and the greens and blues will be lost. Q. Which is the right side of the fabric?
Most aidas and plain-weave fabrics do not have a right or wrong side. Given a choice, if your piece of fabric has a fold in it, use the inside of the fold as the right side - the fold line will be less obvious, if at all, after the piece is washed and ironed. Top of Page

Q. I would really like to make a tallis collar and bag for my son's bar mitzvah (in 2 years) but I'm curious as to how you would finish them. How do you finish the collar and do you attach it to a purchased tallit or do I need to do that?
A. Crafty Needle provides finishing services. You need to send us the tallis that will be used. The original tallis collar is removed, the needlepoint is blocked and then it is hand sewn onto the tallis. The tallis bag gets the same blocking and then our finisher uses velvet or ultra suede (for the back). The inside lining is typically a moire material. The finisher will also sew a pocket inside the bag. The zipper is on the top. The zipper should be the same color as the backing. To complete the tallis bag you will need to send us the completed needlepoint. Top of Page

Q. Do you make siddur covers for children when they graduate from a Jewish day school?
A. Yes, we do these siddur covers quite often. If you want to order one, it would always be best if you could send us the siddur so we can match the size.
We can embroider a Hebrew name on the spine or either side. If you are interested, call our warehouse, 321-214-4379.

Q. Should I pre-wash my cross-stitch fabrics?
Unless the fabric or kit packaging specifically says otherwise - no! Most fabrics has a sizing which helps to maintain their body and keep their shape, thus making them easier to work on. Also, many fabrics shrink slightly when washed, some more than others. Top of Page

Q. How do I wash my completed cross-stitch project?
When your cross stitch is complete, wash it in cold to tepid water using a mild detergent. Do not use any product made for washing wool. Do not use any products that contain bleach, bleaching crystals or a softener. If the piece is badly soiled, you may need to soak it for several hours or longer. If the colors bleed (a very rare occurrence if you use top quality fabrics and threads), do not panic, but continue to soak and rinse it until the excess dyes are gone. Rinse it thoroughly – five or six times if necessary. Let the clear water run through it if possible. Hold the fabric over the sink to let the water drain out. Then lay the fabric flat on a terry cloth towel. Flip the other end of the towel up over it and pat to remove the excess moisture. Put the towel on your ironing board. With a dry iron set on cotton, iron the piece until no more stream rises off it. Allow it to dry face up on a flat surface before framing. To get it to your framer without wrinkling, roll it on an empty paper towel tube.

Q. How do I decide which needle to use for cross-stitch?
These are some general guidelines, in the end you will decide which needle works best with which fabric.…use a #26 tapestry needle on 18- or 16-count aida, use a #24 tapestry needle on 16-, 14-, 11-count fabric, use a #22 tapestry needle on 10-count and heavier fabrics. Use a #24 needle on 32- to 25-count fabrics, and a larger needle on a coarser fabric counts. Top of Page
